M-Pesa Reversal Scams: A Safety Guide for USDT Traders in Kenya
A buyer says they have sent your M-Pesa payment and wants you to release USDT. Check your own transaction records first. This guide explains suspicious reversal claims, third-party payments and what to do when something does not match.

Before you release USDT
A screenshot is not proof of payment. A real credit is not a promise that the payment can never be disputed.
- 1Open M-Pesa yourself, not a link sent by the buyer. Check the incoming transaction in your own account history and confirm the available balance.
- 2Match the amount, transaction reference and sender details to the active P2P order. Follow the marketplace's identity and payment-method rules.
- 3If the sender is unrelated, the payment is missing or the explanation is inconsistent, do not release USDT. Use the platform's appeal or dispute process.
- 4Save the order and payment records. Release only after completing the required checks and resolving any discrepancy through official support.
No check or waiting period makes P2P risk-free. Do not move funds to try to defeat a legitimate reversal or investigation.
What a reversal scam can look like
- A fake payment message or edited screenshot is used to pressure you to release crypto, although no money reached your account.
- A caller claims to be Safaricom support and gives 'reversal' instructions that actually send money or expose your PIN.
- Someone asks you to make a separate refund to a different number. You risk paying out money independently of any official reversal.
- A payment comes from someone other than the buyer on the order. Its origin may be disputed, and you may have no relationship with the actual sender.
These are warning patterns, not proof that every reversal request is fraudulent. A genuine mistaken payment also needs to be handled through the official process.
A real payment and a reversible payment are different
Safaricom provides a reversal process for eligible M-Pesa transactions. A request is not the same as a completed reversal, and the outcome depends on the transaction and Safaricom's conditions. Checking your own balance helps detect a fake receipt; it does not establish that funds are permanently final.
Do not rely on claims such as "wait one minute and you are safe" or "all M-Pesa transfers are irreversible." If a payment is questioned, ask Safaricom about that transaction rather than accepting the counterparty's explanation.
If a payment is disputed or appears reversed
- 1Check your own account history and balance to identify what actually changed. Keep the transaction ID and any reversal notice.
- 2If the P2P order is still active, do not release crypto while the discrepancy remains unresolved. Open an appeal in the platform and explain the payment issue.
- 3Contact Safaricom through its official website, app or verified customer-care channels. Ask for the transaction status and a complaint reference.
- 4If you already released the crypto, report promptly to both Safaricom and the marketplace. Preserve the evidence; neither report guarantees recovery.
- 5For suspected fraud, use the official reporting channels and consider reporting to the police. Do not pay a stranger who promises to recover the funds.
Never share your M-Pesa PIN, one-time codes, crypto seed phrase or passwords. Safaricom's fraud guidance says suspicious messages can be forwarded to 333. Check its current instructions directly.
Keep a private evidence pack
- M-Pesa transaction ID, original messages and transaction history or statement.
- P2P order ID, in-platform chat, buyer details shown on the order and payment instructions.
- Screenshots of suspicious requests, reversal notices and support case references.
- Dates and times, amount received and any crypto transfer reference available.
Keep originals. Do not post account numbers, identity documents or unredacted statements in public groups; submit them only through verified support or lawful reporting channels.
Frequently asked questions
Can an M-Pesa payment be reversed after I see it in my account?
Safaricom has a reversal process for eligible transactions. An incoming credit is an essential check, but it is not a guarantee against a later dispute, reversal or account review. Contact Safaricom about the specific transaction.
How long should I wait before releasing USDT?
There is no universal waiting time that makes a payment risk-free. Follow the marketplace rules, independently check the transaction and sender, and open a dispute if anything is inconsistent rather than relying on a countdown.
Should I refund a caller who says they paid by mistake?
Do not send a separate payment based on a call or message. Check your own M-Pesa records and ask Safaricom to handle any genuine reversal through its official process. Coordinate an active crypto-order dispute with the marketplace.
Does crypto escrow protect my M-Pesa balance?
Escrow holds the crypto during an active marketplace order. It does not control Safaricom's payment system or guarantee recovery of fiat or crypto after a disputed payment.
