Crypto Regulation in Tanzania
Tanzania's current regulatory position differs from several other African markets covered by CryptoPayAfrica.
The Bank of Tanzania continues to monitor cryptocurrency and virtual-asset developments but currently states that cryptocurrencies remain outside the country's regulatory framework.

Bank of Tanzania position
The Bank of Tanzania states that cryptocurrencies:
- • are not recognised as legal tender
- • are not licensed
- • are not authorised
- • currently fall outside Tanzania's regulatory framework
The Tanzanian Shilling remains the country's official currency. The Bank advises the public to exercise caution when engaging in cryptocurrency transactions.
“Not legal tender” does not mean the same thing as “a licensed crypto market”
Tanzania's position should not be simplified into “crypto is fully regulated”.
CryptoPayAfrica does not label a provider a “licensed crypto exchange in Tanzania” unless there is direct authoritative evidence supporting that exact claim.
Regulatory sandbox
The Bank of Tanzania also operates a FinTech Regulatory Sandbox.
In its 2025 Financial Inclusion Report, the Bank stated that one solution approved for sandbox testing focuses on digital payment and settlement services using stablecoin-based technology for cross-border transactions, particularly tourism-related payments.
This demonstrates regulatory experimentation with stablecoin technology. It does not mean that cryptocurrency generally has become licensed or legal tender in Tanzania.

Is Bitcoin legal tender in Tanzania?
No. The Tanzanian Shilling remains the official currency, and the Bank of Tanzania does not recognise cryptocurrencies as legal tender.
Are crypto exchanges licensed in Tanzania?
The Bank of Tanzania currently states that cryptocurrencies are not licensed or authorised under the current framework. Do not assume a global provider has Tanzanian crypto authorisation merely because TZS appears on its platform.
Is Tanzania banning blockchain technology?
The regulatory position on cryptocurrencies should not be confused with a blanket rejection of blockchain or fintech innovation. The Bank of Tanzania operates a regulatory sandbox and has tested a stablecoin-based cross-border payment solution.
